KELLNER ON LIVERIES

Currently, New York has a two-tiered system when it comes to our taxis and limousines: we can hail a cab on the street or call for a livery cab.  Now the law has changed .

Beginning in June, New York City's Taxi & Limousine Commission  will be able to sell medallions to 6,000 livery cabs.  Once this process starts, New Yorkers will be able to hail a livery cab just like hailing a yellow cab.  However, as with other advancements in history, problems will no doubt arise.

New York is not the Wild West.  We need to make sure that everyone plays by the same rules.  That's why I introduced legislation last week in Albany to make sure that livery cabs, who must apply for a special license through the Taxi & Limousine Commission, are held to account if they break the rules.

Under my legislation, if a licensed livery cab driver breaks the rules, they will be charged with a misdemeanor, lose their license and face 30 days in jail and up to a $1000 fine.  If a non-licensed livery car driver picks up a passenger on the street, they will face the same consequences as above, but they could also have their car seized by the City.

Most livery car operators play by the rules.  However, some make the system unsafe and unreliable for the rest of us.  I hope to stop that with this bill.
