GET A FREE HEALTH SCREENING

The YWCA is celebrating National Women's Health Week May 13th-18th. It is a weeklong observance to unite communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups across the county in an effort to promote women's health.  We would like to invite you to a FREE Community Health Fair hosted by the YWCA of Brooklyn in collaboration with The Brooklyn Hospital Center and State Senator Velmanette Montgomery on Wednesday, May 16th from 1pm-4pm.

We also encourage women to take the following steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases:

  • Get active. The YWCA offers a variety of FREE fitness programs which include:

                -Yoga Classes
                -Senior Aerobics Classes
                -Start Your Engine, a 24-week comprehensive health program beginning May 29th that 
                  incorporates life coaching, exercise, as well as cooking and nutrition classes to help 
                  participants accomplish weight loss goals.

  • Eat healthy: 

                - Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your daily diet. You can purchase locally
                  grown organic vegetables from farmers markets or CSA programs, such as the
                  Brooklyn Beet CSA at the YWCA every Tuesday.
                - Limit foods and
drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol.

  • Manage stress:

              -  Balance work, home, and play. 
              -  Get 7-9 hours of sleep each night.
              -  Get counseling after a traumatic event/ experience if necessary.

  • Protect yourself and your family:

             -   Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet.
             -   Wash hands to stop the spread of germs.
             -   Build safe and healthy relationships with family and friends.

  • Get regular check-ups and exams:

            - Do not skip your yearly breast and cervical examinations.
            - Ask your doctor or nurse how you can lower your risk for health problems.
            - Find out what exams or shots you need and when you need them.
