BROOKLYN LIT MATCH ON CHOICES

Markowitz Press Release.JPGBP MARKOWITZ ANNOUNCES 7TH ANNUAL "BROOKLYN LIT MATCH" TEEN WRITING CONTEST

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz invites Brooklyn high school students to submit stories, poems, essays, spoken word and raps for the 7th annual "Brooklyn Lit Match" teen writing contest, a competition held in conjunction with the Brooklyn Book Festival. The winning submissions will be published in a book and the first place winner will receive a laptop computer. All students attending high school in Brooklyn or who live in Brooklyn are welcome to submit.

The theme of this year's contest is Brooklyn Choices. Students are asked to write on the following:

In every facet of your daily lives, you find yourself making choices, whether it's what to eat for breakfast, the people you accept into you lives or the values you embrace. Having the freedom to make choices is an issue being widely discussed throughout our borough, city and country. Freedom to make the choices you want can be at once exciting and frightening, or just different.  Choices large and small can change your life--and the lives of others--in a flash, or over time. What story--true or fiction--can you tell about the freedom to choose an outcome

A committee of publishers, editors and literary agents will select 10 finalists, including a first place winner. The 10 finalists will be invited to read their work at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, September 23, 2012. Their work will be professionally edited and published in an anthology to be released by Akashic Books. Past winners have included students from Fort Hamilton High School, the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media and Benjamin Banneker Academy, among others.

Entries are due by Friday, June 29, 2012, can be typed or handwritten, and should not exceed 2,000 words. They can be written in any form: a story, poem, essay, or rap. Please include a cover sheet with your name, address, school, principal, age and telephone number. There is no fee to enter, and you must be a resident of Brooklyn or student at a Brooklyn high school at the time of submission.

Entries should be sent to Brooklyn Book Festival Lit Match, Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 or e-mailed to ekoch@brooklynbp.nyc.gov.   Any questions regarding the writing competition can be sent to the same e-mail address or directed to Liz Koch, 718-802-3852.
