American Evangelist Spawned Hate Abroad, and Faces Consequences at Home Scott Lively, the founder and president of "Abiding Truth Ministries," is being sued in a Massachusetts Federal Court by an organization known as the "Sexual Minorities Uganda" under a law called the "Alien Tort Claims Statute"--which allows non-American residents to sue in American courts when violations of international law are alleged.
Plaintiffs claim that Lively provoked violence against gay men and women in Uganda between 2002 and 2009, and that in that final year, the African nation proposed a law that would have imposed the death penalty for engaging in gay acts.
The complaint alleges that, along with other religious and political activists, Lively helped incite attacks against gays by asserting that the latter would corrupt the nation's youth.
While Lively has denied any wrongdoing and claims that he is being prosecuted for his religious beliefs, Plaintiffs have countered that the suit is based on his words and deeds, rather than his beliefs.
The 2009 Ugandan bill was ultimately defeated due to a public outcry from the United States and European nations, but was reintroduced in the Ugandan parliament in February.
We're kinda hoping this doesn't get any Livelier.
