The biggest fundraising deadline of my 2012 campaign cycle is just days away. For me, this is an opportunity to show in real numbers the strength that you and others have given me - and to make sure I have money in the bank for the 2012 campaign season.
The first quarter fundraising totals in an election year are paramount. Based on these results, I can plan my own campaign and begin to map out how I will be able to help progressive and female candidates across the country. My hope is that today, you will ensure that I have a strong fundraising total for the quarter and can continue my work on your behalf.
I love campaigns because I get to interact with voters face to face on a daily basis. Right now we are in the midst of gathering petition signatures one by one with my enthusiastic campaign team out on the streets of my district, including the new areas I gained in redistricting. As important as our work is in Washington, I like to be in constant touch with my constituents.
But since each week it seems like there is another Republican attack on women's rights, I always have to be ready to put all my energy into leading the counterattack - in my district, in Washington or across the country. Just last month you may have seen me ask, "Where are the women?" when my Republican colleagues on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing on birth control involving testimony from five men and no women.
This war on women stretches from Republicans in Congress all the way to talk radio hosts making disparaging and obscene remarks. One big-money Santorum donor even joked about women using aspirin as contraception. But rest assured, I will always be ready to stand up and protect the rights and dignity of women everywhere.
With a show of strength this quarter, I will be prepared to defend myself against any potential campaign challenger and I can focus entirely on making sure this country continues to move forward, rather than taking giant steps backwards.
