Lucas,
Right now, two versions of a highway funding bill that will affect all of us are making their way through Congress.
The Senate's version is supported by leading consumer, health and safety groups. It includes commonsense, cost-effective measures to address serious highway safety problems. It will save thousands of lives and prevent countless injuries every year. It will make the roads safer for you and your family.
The House of Representatives' version has lots of provisions to protect corporate special interests, weaken environmental rules and fund the Keystone XL Pipeline.
This Tuesday, the House could vote on a motion offered by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) encouraging the House to adopt the Senate version of the bill.
Take these three easy steps and urge your representative to support highway safety.
1. Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
2. Ask to be connected to your representative's office.
3. Leave this message: "I am a constituent and I am calling to ask the representative to vote 'yes' on Congressman Hoyer's Motion to Instruct on the transportation bill."
You don't have to be an expert. You won't have to debate anyone on the phone. All you have to do is make the call for safer roads.
Here's some of what the Senate version of the surface transportation reauthorization bill would do:
- make cars, large trucks and intercity buses safer
- strengthen laws on teen driving, drunk driving and distracted driving
- protect children and provide better consumer information
In 2010, nearly 33,000 people died on our highways and over 2 million more were injured -- at a cost to society of more than $230 billion. Call (202) 224-3121 and ask your representative to support the Hoyer Motion.
Thank you for taking action.
Sincerely,
Robert Weissman
