Schumer Announces That Failla, Whom Schumer Recommended to President Obama to Serve on the Southern District in April, Is Officially Nominated by the President
Schumer: Failla Will Be a Tremendous Asset on the Bench
U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that Assistant United States Katherine Polk Failla, whom Schumer recommended to President Obama in April, has been officially nominated by the President to serve as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Failla has extensive legal expertise and experience in both the private sector and with the US Attorney's office. In recommending Failla, Schumer cited her years of dedication to legal practice as well as her commitment to public service.
"I am pleased that President Obama has nominated Katherine Failla to serve on the Southern District bench," said Schumer. "With her outstanding legal experience and commitment to public service, there is no doubt in my mind that Katherine Failla will be a tremendous asset on the bench and I look forward to her confirmation."
Failla, 42, graduated from Harvard Law School where she served as Co-Editor in Chief of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy. She also was a member of the Harvard Women's Law Association. Upon graduating, Failla clerked for the Hon. Joseph E. Irenas of the U.S. District court, in New Jersey.
After her clerkship, Failla went to work for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, where she served as an associate attorney in the litigation Section. Her responsibilities included conducting oral arguments in New York state and federal courts, and her practice focused on the numerous legal areas including securities regulation and litigation, bankruptcy, and intellectual property.
In 2000, Failla began working at the US Attorney's office. Over the last decade, she has been promoted from Assistant US Attorney, to Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney, to Chief Appellate Attorney, where she now serves as chief legal advisor to the Office. She currently provides guidance to other prosecutors on legal issues, grand jury and trial practice, and policy matters, and manages a docket of 150-200 criminals appeals.
