CAROLYN'S GOT PRIDE

maloney_for_congress_banner.jpgDear Lucas,

I wish you could have been with me on Sunday as I marched in Manhattan's annual Gay Pride Parade. Check out my Facebook page for some photos!

I have been fighting for LGBT rights and marching in the Pride Parade throughout my career. Back when I was a City Councilwoman, I was proud to cast one of the decisive votes to enact New York's landmark lesbian and gay rights bill in 1986 -- and, the following year, to write and introduce the first legislation in New York State's history to provide legal recognition to same-sex couples.

Since then, we have seen incredible progress -- but we must not stop until we achieve full equality for all under the law. The core principles of our nation demand nothing less.

We still have to fight for the repeal of DOMA. We still have to secure marriage equality in most of the nation. And we still have to treat the same-sex spouses of Federal Employees equally. That's why I've introduced the Family and Medical Leave Inclusion Act, to expand current law so that a federal employee can have leave to care for a same sex partner who is ill.

Exactly one year ago Sunday, Marriage Equality became law in New York. Exactly one year ago Sunday, New York took its rightful place as a leader in the fight for LGBT equality.

So I was particularly proud to march in the Pride Parade this year, especially knowing that President Obama and Vice President Biden have recently come out in favor of full marriage equality for our entire nation.

I take pride in the years I have spent fighting for the LGBT community, and I am overjoyed that today we celebrated the one year anniversary of the Marriage Equality Act, a historic step towards equal rights for all New Yorkers.

We will keep fighting until the we achieve full equality and will never rest until all Americans -- lesbian, gay, bi, trans and straight -- enjoy full protection under the law.

Yours,

CAROLYN B. MALONEY
