Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Last week, I learned that a public school principal in Rosedale, Queens prohibited a fifth-grader from giving a speech he had written on same-gender marriage.
Listen to Kameron's full speech by clicking here
In response, I have issued the following statement:
"Kameron Slade's principal has taught a lesson in hate. There is nothing inappropriate about LGBT families or lives. Same-gender marriage is legal in New York State. Children need to have an opportunity to discuss same-gender marriage as they would any other appropriate topic in the public school system. To only allow Kameron to give his speech in front of a separate assembly is discriminatory. Separate but equal does not work. The Department of Education must be held accountable and is legally required to uphold its own policies of non-discrimination. Finally, the Chancellor must act appropriately in this matter or he is making a mockery of the DOE's Respect For All curriculum."
Would you join me in letting Chancellor Dennis Walcott know that separate but equal does not work?
Email him at dmwalcott@schools.nyc.gov or call his office at 212-374-0200.
Also forward this email to your family, friends and neighbors.
Danny.
