Lucas,
I refuse to believe that the Founding Fathers intended for corporations and wealthy individuals to buy elections.
But that's what the Supreme Court decided in Citizens United...and since that time, millions upon millions of secret dollars have flowed into our political elections.
What this secret money does is drown out the voices of Americans who reach deep into their pocketbooks to give $5 or $10 to the candidates they believe reflect their own interests.
This flood of money is unconscionable to me...and it corrupts our elections. That's why I went down to the House floor today and signed a Discharge Petition, demanding that the House of Representatives have a vote on the DISCLOSE Act.
The DISCLOSE Act would make sure that we receive full disclosure about these secret donors.
For Americans to have that information is the absolute least we can do. And yet, even though almost 150 House members signed it, House Republicans are doing everything in their power to block such a vote.
Because they are the ones benefitting from keeping those millions of dollars secret.
They are afraid that if there is a vote, the American people would tell their representatives that they must reform a system that enables corporations and wealthy individuals to give millions of dollars at will.
Thank you,
