THE JACKSONS ADDED TO SEASIDE SUMMER CONCERTS AUGUST 11--GLORIA GAYNOR, VILLAGE PEOPLE TO OPEN SERIES AT CONEY ISLAND TONIGHT WITH DONNA SUMMER TRIBUTE; PUBLIC ENEMY, SALT-N-PEPA, TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY HOUSTON BY CISSY HOUSTON TO HEADLINE MLK CONCERTS
New York's two largest free outdoor music series hosted by BP Markowitz kick off tonight, July 12
Beginning tonight, July 12, and through August 20, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will host the 34th annual Seaside Summer Concert Series at Coney Island and the 30th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field in Crown Heights.
"Once again, New York City's two largest free outdoor music series will be bringing sweet summer sounds to Brooklyn for music lovers to enjoy absolutely free," said BP Markowitz. "This past year, we were sad to lose beloved music icons Donna Summer and Whitney Houston, and the Seaside Summer Concert Series will open with Gloria Gaynor, The Village People, the Trammps and Rose Royce paying tribute to Ms. Summer--who played Seaside in 2009--and gospel legend Cissy Houston will close out the Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series by remembering her daughter, Whitney, with a special tribute. Between those two highly anticipated performances, the Jacksons, Public Enemy, Salt-n-Pepa, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Squeeze, The Romantics, Dennis DeYoung of Styx, Gladys Knight, The Commodores, the Annual Latino Night by the Sea, the Mighty Sparrow, Bootsy Collins, SOS Band, Ledisi, and Heads of State featuring Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant will be among the spectacular acts lighting up the big stage of Brooklyn, USA!"
For more than three decades, the Seaside Summer Concert Series has attracted top name classic rock, pop, oldies, contemporary and Latin performers to Coney Island. This summer, the shows will again be held at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, next to the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones. A limited number of $5 rental chairs in a specially designated area are available on a first come, first served basis. All shows are Thursday nights--except for the Friday, July 20 show--beginning at 7:30pm.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series is celebrating its spectacular 30th anniversary with a star-studded lineup of classic soul, R&B, contemporary, Caribbean and gospel artists. The free concerts are Monday nights at Wingate Field, with entrances on Brooklyn Avenue between Rutland Road and Winthrop Street. The public is encouraged to bring their own chairs. A limited amount of general seating is available on a first come, first served basis. The program begins at 7:30pm.
For more than twenty years, while he was a state senator, Marty Markowitz worked along with the Seaside Summer Concert Series and the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series to bring some of the best live entertainment to Brooklyn. Now as Brooklyn Borough President, he continues to host the concerts that have entertained hundreds of thousands of residents over the years.
