WHERE'S THE OTHER HALF?

gillibrand_email_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgDear Lucas,

I'm so excited to announce the first pick for our Off the Sidelines Book Club: Half the Sky by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.

This book about the oppression of women in developing countries in Africa and Asia is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. It was by far the most popular recommendation, so I'm sure you'll find it a fascinating read.

We're planning to hold the meeting to discuss Half The Sky in mid-March. We'll stream the meeting live online and we'll take your questions and comments live, so I hope you'll gather with your friends to join me for a great discussion. We'll have more updates to share before then, so if you haven't already, please be sure to sign up today to receive all the details.

We had so many great book ideas. Here are just a few:

Nonfiction
When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present, by Gail Collins
Big Girls Don't Cry: The Election That Changed Everything For American Women, by Rebecca Traister
Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World, by Marie C. Wilson
Bossypants, by Tina Fey

Fiction
The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood
A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini
Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese

We're going to be alternating between nonfiction and fiction, so please do keep the recommendations coming. We'd especially like more fiction titles for the summer pick.

Looking forward to our March meeting!

Best,

Kirsten
