IT'S A DYSFUNCTIONAL MESS

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

There's a federal agency that's supposed to make sure candidates, super PACS and corporate front groups aren't breaking the law.

It's called the Federal Election Commission (it's the "FEC" in Citizens United v. FEC).

And unfortunately, it's a dysfunctional mess. Three of the FEC's six commissioners think corporate front groups should be allowed to do whatever they want. Five of the six are still serving despite expired terms.

President Obama can fix the FEC whenever he wants to by nominating new commissioners. But, like the appointment of Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, he's not going to pick this fight with corporate cronies unless we turn up the pressure.

We need every single person who is reading this message to take action.

We've teamed up with our friends at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington to take our message right to the White House's virtual front door -- the petition page on the White House website.

Sign the petition on the "We the People" section of the White House website.

The White House says it will issue an official response to any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures. Let's make fixing the FEC a priority.

Signing the petition is a simple three-step process:

1. If you've never signed a petition on WhiteHouse.gov before, click "Create Account" and complete the really simple pop-up form.
2. Check your email. You'll have to click on a link in the message from WhiteHouse.gov to verify your new account.
3. On the petition page, click the green "Sign this petition" button. That's it!

Please sign today and help us get to 25,000 signatures by February 10 so that the White House has to respond.
