Lucas,
Public Citizen does a lot.
- After six years of relentless advocacy, we won a landmark new law — the STOCK Act — which prohibits insider trading by members of Congress and others who work on Capitol Hill.
- Public Citizen activists helped shatter the record for comments to the Securities and Exchange Commission, demanding that the agency require corporations to disclose their political spending.
- We won a U.S. Supreme Court case, Mims v. Arrow Financial Services, defending the rights of consumers victimized by corporations abusing "robocall" technology.
- We made a new law regulating the safety of medical devices much stronger than it would have been without our intervention.
- An international campaign that we help lead foiled the planned 2012 completion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a disastrous "free trade" pact that would have, in effect, expanded NAFTA throughout Asia and Latin America.
- Working with allies, we thwarted a host of anti-regulation bills designed by the likes of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to weaken crucial consumer protections that guard against corporate rip-offs, tainted food and unsafe products.
- We brought together a left-right coalition, including property-rights activists, to work on blocking the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline in Texas.
- Our legal team filed a brief on behalf of 10 public health groups in a case where Big Tobacco is challenging mandatory graphic warnings on cigarette packs.
- An 11-year campaign by Public Citizen and allies derailed expansion of the World Trade Organization's powers.
- The nationwide grassroots movement for a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United ruling now has 11 states, 350 municipalities, 125 members of Congress, one current U.S. president, 100 allied organizations, and over 2 million citizen activists onboard. Nobody has done more than Public Citizen to shift this campaign from pipedream to mainstream.
That's just a sample of the truly incredible quantity and variety of work that Public Citizen — that's you and hundreds of thousands of our supporters from every corner of the nation — got done this year.
But there is so much more to do in 2013.
Please make as generous a contribution as you can right now so that our financial power matches our citizen power.
We must never let up.
Onward,
Robert Weissman
President, Public Citizen
