REMEMBERING FRANK MACCHIAROLA

BP MARKOWITZ LOWERS BROOKLYN FLAG IN MEMORY OF BROOKLYNITE DR. FRANK MACCHIAROLA

On Wednesday, December 19, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz lowered the Brooklyn flag atop Brooklyn Borough Hall in honor of Brooklynite Dr. Frank Macchiarola, who passed away yesterday at his home in Downtown Brooklyn at the age of 71. The flag will remain at half-mast until Monday, December 24.

"Brooklyn lost one of its greatest sons yesterday," said BP Markowitz. "Frank Macchiarola was an educator extraordinaire who played a key role in any project that might benefit Brooklynites. Frank's commitment to the young people of Brooklyn and New York City was unmatched—as a New York City Schools Chancellor, as a professor and administrator at so many of New York City's universities, and of course as the president of his alma mater, Brooklyn's own St. Francis College. At every point in his career, Frank was a tireless advocate for students, whether it was in fighting to better the quality of education throughout New York City schools or giving personal attention to a pupil in need while president of St. Francis College. I extend my condolences and prayers to his wife, Mary, their sons Joseph, Michael, and Frank, and to all of their family as we mourn the passing of a true Brooklyn legend."
