The Surrogate's Court is a court like no other, governed by unique statutes and procedural rules. And, it is a court that touches thousands of lives every year, often when people are at their most vulnerable, emotionally and financially.
Manhattan needs a Surrogate's Court Judge who has experience there - both in the law and in the administrative management of the court. Judge Rita Mella has that experience. She was Principal Law Clerk in the Surrogate's Court and knows the law and how the court should work. Judge Mella has worked on creating policies that ensure the accountability and transparency of the court.
