DID I READ THIS RIGHT?

bookshelf_books_library_nyreblog_com_.jpgThe ACLU has filed a "right to read" class-action lawsuit against the state of Michigan, a local school district, and public agencies that oversee the state's public education system, alleging that group violated Michigan's Constitution by failing to ensure that all students meet certain literacy standards.

Because less than 10% of elementary school students are proficient in either math or basic reading skills, the case focuses on the deprivation of the youngsters' entitlement to a satisfactory education. (To compound matters just a bit, the school district faces budgetary problems, decreasing attendance rates, and increasing political fallout.)
