BEACHES

nyc.gov_news_logo_nyreblog_com_.gifDear Fellow New Yorkers,

New York City is fortunate to have a large expanse of shoreline and local waterways that are the cleanest they have been in more than 100 years. In order to keep our waterfront in good condition, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, together with the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Parks and Recreation, recently launched the "Clean Streets, Clean Beaches" campaign to educate citizens about how street litter can wash into our sewers and ultimately spoil our beautiful beaches.

In addition to the campaign, the City is hosting a day of service on Sunday, August 12 to help clean up some of the local beaches that New Yorkers enjoy the most. The event will take place from 8:00am to 12:00pm (noon) and we will be sending teams of volunteers to the following locations:

  • Conference House, Staten Island, Conference House Park Visitors Center
  • Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, Gerritsen Ave., street end, south of Lois Ave.
  • Kaiser Park, Brooklyn, Park House at West 28th St. and Neptune Ave.
  • Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, exit off the Belt Parkway eastbound just past Exit 9, Knapp St. or via bike path which starts at Emmons Ave. and Brigham St.
  • Pugsley Creek Park, Bronx, Lacombe Ave. and Pugsley Ave.
  • Rockaway Beach, Queens, B. 97th St. on the boardwalk

We invite you - along with your family and friends - to come enjoy the day and help keep our beaches clean.

For more information or to sign up for the event, please email beachcleanups@dep.nyc.gov or please call us at (718) 595-6599. The rain date for this event will be the following Sunday, August 19.

We hope to hear from you and we look forward to seeing you there.
