The OVC is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) . The OVC provides federal funds to support victim compensation and assistance programs. They also provide training for professionals who work with victims, support projects for victims' rights and services, and educate the public about victim issues.

National Observances
OVC also sponsors the annual National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) . In 2012, the NCVRW is from April 22 through April 28.
National Night Out is a crime/drug prevention event held the first Tuesday of every August (first Tuesday of October in Texas).
