On Thursday, April 5th at 12:30 Latinos for Trayvon Martin will hold a news conference at the Hostos Community College, 500 Grand Concourse (in the Plaza) to express their support for justice in the case of Trayvon Martin and call for the arrest George Zimmerman. Faculty and student activist will denounce the efforts by conservative media to cast the Latino community as "silent" on this institutional injustice.

The effort at Hostos is part of a broader expression of support for the Martin family scheduled on Thursday, April 5 where teachers are calling for educators to wear hoodies, stickers, and speak to co-workers about the case.

During the past month some in the mainstream media have attempted to play the "Hispanic" card" to transform what appears to be a racially motivated murder to a Black-Brown division. At the press conference Latino and other faculty and students will explain why "Todos Somos Trayvon Martin."

In a March 30 column by FoxLatino entitled, "Latino Silence over Zimmerman," draws fire from Soni Sangha who argues "that prominent Latino rights groups have remained on the sidelines of the discussion of race and the case." Others like Rush Limbaugh have questioned why Latinos have not come out in defense of "Latino" George Zimmermen.   In a New York Times column entitled "In Florida a Death Foretold," the Latinos community is stigmatized by inaccurate survey data indicating that Latinos felt that had more in common with whites than blacks ignoring the common Black and Brown struggle against racism in the United States.   We will not be divided. Come listen as Latinos express their support of Trayvon and denounce the divide and conquer tactics.

Our Students, Our Trayvon!

Thursday, April 5th

Trayvon Martin's tragic killing has brought thousands into the street to demand justice for his family. Justice for Trayvon Martin means justice for all who are targeted because of the color of their skin.

In New York City schools, our students know racial profiling all too well. Many of our students, just by being Black or Latin@, are treated like criminals every single day - in stores, on the street and increasingly in our schools.

We must stand up against racism before it's too late.

This Thursday, New York City teachers are calling on educators to:

* wear hoodies to work this Thursday,

* wear stickers that stand up to injustice; and/or

* speak with co-workers and students about Trayvon Martin and the larger issues surrounding his tragic story.

Encourage members of your school community to do the same.

Teaching about Trayvon : NYCoRE opened up a wiki page on its teaching and learning page specifically for addressing these issues. We are seeking out more examples from the community. If you want to add a lesson, resources, or description of what you did in your own communities, please become a member of the wiki page, or email info@nycore.org
