IRS: Payment Options
According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) , if you cannot pay the full amount of taxes owed by the deadline, file your tax return by the deadline, and pay as much as you can to avoid penalties and interest.
The IRS accepts federal tax payments by:
Payments by Checks, Money Orders, or Cashier's Checks
- Must be payable to the U.S. Treasury, and mailed to address listed on the notice or instructions.
- Must include the Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) , tax period, and related tax forms.
Cash Payments
Do not send cash through the mail; take cash payments to your local IRS office .
Please note: Due to staffing limitations, not all local IRS offices accept cash.

Electronic payment options are a convenient and secure method for paying taxes.
