AN ELECTION WITH NO LIMITS

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgWe now know that Election 2012 is going to be ruled by Big Money in a way we haven't seen in a long time. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission has opened the door for corporations to spend whatever they like on elections -- and they are rushing through. Now, friends of all the major presidential candidates are setting up Super PACs that can raise unlimited money to elect their preferred candidate -- meaning we're just a short step away from direct corporate contributions to presidential candidates.

Election 2012 may be remembered as the election with no limits.

That's why I'm so enthused about our stepped up efforts to take on this problem, head on. We're going to intensify our efforts to win a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United v. FEC, we're going to make visible progress, and then we're going to succeed.

Please make a generous contribution of $25, $40, $100 or more right now to support our work to take our historic campaign to overturn Citizens United v. FEC -- and all our work to hold corporate power in check -- to the next level.

Last week, Mark Hays, one of our new constitutional amendment organizers, introduced himself to you in the note I'm forwarding with this message. This week, Jonah Minkoff-Zern has joined us, and a third organizer will be joining us shortly.

I can't tell you how excited I am about their energy and savvy -- and about all of us intensifying our efforts to undo the damage of Citizens United v. FEC.

Here's how we're going to mark progress in building the movement for a constitutional amendment:

1. We're going to sign up many more organizations -- big national groups and vibrant community organizations -- to endorse the idea of an amendment and start talking to their members about the constitutional amendment movement.

2. We're going to work for state and local resolutions calling for an amendment. These will provide concrete evidence of the growing demand for an amendment.

3. We're going to secure commitments to support an amendment from more and more members of Congress.

4. We're going to intensify our efforts to promote DemocracyIsForPeople.Org, and bring tens and hundreds of thousands of new people into our campaign.

When I say "we" are going to do all these things, I mean all of us. Public Citizen's extraordinary staff -- but also you.

Please make a generous contribution of $25, $40, $100 or more right now to support our work to take our historic campaign to overturn Citizens United v. FEC -- and all our work to hold corporate power in check -- to the next level.

We face a monumental challenge, but we're up for it.

Let's go!
