Big news: the Hawaii Senate race just got a lot more competitive. Former Republican Governor Linda Lingle is in. A poll released this week shows Lingle closing in on EMILY's List candidate Mazie Hirono, and the GOP sees an opportunity to pick up a seat and take back the U.S. Senate in 2012.
We can't let that happen.
Lingle is as partisan as it gets: she nominated Sarah Palin to be Vice President at the Republican National Convention, and she can't wait to get to Washington and help Mitch McConnell push a radical Tea Party agenda. And she'll have access to nearly unlimited special interest money.
Progressive champion Mazie Hirono needs immediate help from the EMILY's List community to answer every attack that comes from Lingle and her Republican friends.

Lingle is a top recruit for the national Republican establishment, and she recently suggested interest in Paul Ryan's budget -- the one ending Medicare as we know it -- while admitting to never reading the bill.
Meanwhile, Mazie has fought to strengthen Hawaii's economy and helped save or create 15,000 jobs in the state. She has been a huge advocate for children as Hawaii's Lieutenant Governor and Congresswoman. She was named a Pre-K Champion, and she's secured nearly $200 million to prevent heavy cuts to education. Not to mention, she would make history as the first Asian-American woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.
Mazie faces a competitive primary against conservative Democrat and former Congressman Ed Case before she takes on Lingle in the general election.
It's not going to be easy -- Lingle's got an extensive network of Republican special interest allies who can help fund her campaign.
