Dear Friend,
As you may know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month . While it is important to raise awareness about this problem throughout the year, given the disturbing instances of intimate partner homicide we have seen in the news recently, it is more crucial than ever that we use this occasion to bring the topic of domestic violence to the forefront.
We will commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month by joining with the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence to Shine the Light on Domestic Violence in Times Square
Shine the Light on Domestic Violence, a.k.a. Turn the State Purple , initiated by the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence four years ago, is a statewide public awareness campaign that helps bring the subject of domestic violence out of the shadows and into the public eye. By turning landmarks around the state purple, the campaign sparks discussion about this devastating problem that threatens the security and claims the lives of so many New Yorkers. What better place to shed light on this problem than in one of the brightest spots in the world, Times Square.
We are gathering a crowd of advocates, survivors and passerbys to stand with us for a lighting ceremony centered around turning various screens purple in Times Square. The signs that have committed to turn purple and advertise domestic violence awareness messaging include: ABC Supersign, American Eagle, Bank of America, Clear Channel Spectacolor, Disney, TSQ Digital, Nasdaq, Thomson Reuters and Walgreens.
Also on October 12, The Con Edison clock tower will shine purple as a part of our Shine the Light campaign, and will remain lit purple through October 18.
I want to extend a special thank you to my Domestic Violence Task Force who has worked diligently to organize and publicize this event. Please join with us on Wednesday, October 12th to take a stand and Shine the Light on Domestic Violence. Remember to wear purple!
Sincerely,
Scott M. Stringer
