Yamaya USA, Inc. Recalls Masago (Capelin Roe) Because Of Possible Health Risk
YAMAYA USA, INC of Torrance, CA is recalling Masago (Capelin Roe), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The Masago (Capelin Roe) was distributed to retail stores in Los Angeles (California), Baltimore (Maryland), Atlanta (Georgia), and Mexico.
The Masago (Capelin Roe) was packed 2 lb (907g) in plastic container with white label has Japanese writing and English writing that has "Yamaya USA, Inc." as the brand and the product label shows Masago (Capelin Roe) and the "Item No. 09867" is indicated on the box.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was the result of a microbiological sampling of the facility by the FDA which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.
