The herbal supplement saw palmetto has been promoted as a way to deal with an enlarged prostate gland, which can be a problem for men as they grow older. But researchers report no evidence that it works.

The researchers looked at data on 369 men ages 45 and older, who got up to three times the usual amount of saw palmetto extract. At Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Dr. Kevin McVary:

"Our findings rather definitely state there is no influence in any definable way in terms of urinary symptoms, quality of life, sexual health, or other aspects of prostate health." (11 seconds)

The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
