A PIPELINE ACROSS AMERICA?

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

Tomorrow, the State Department will hold its final public hearing in Washington, D.C., on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

I will be there to deliver Public Citizen's comments and urge the State Department to deny the construction permit for the 1,700 mile pipeline that would carry the world's dirtiest oil from Canada's tar sands through America's heartland to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Sign on to Public Citizen's comments on the Keystone XL pipeline !

In August, the State Department released its final environmental impact statement for the Keystone XL pipeline. Like the two preliminary statements before it, which the Environmental Protection Agency deemed inadequate, the State Department determined that the pipeline would produce "limited adverse" effects.

We couldn't disagree more. The State Department has not fully considered the potential impact of the Keystone XL pipeline on the environment and public health.

But its final determination is not surprising. Emails obtained by Friends of the Earth through the Freedom of Information Act process provide evidence of a cozy relationship between lead TransCanada lobbyist Paul Elliott (a former top Hillary Clinton campaign aide) and various State Department officials.

How do we combat the improper influence of pipeline lobbyists over State Department officials?

1) Voice your opposition: Sign on to Public Citizen's comment on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline .

2) Do you live in the greater Washington, D.C., area? Come to the Tar Sands Rally being held outside the public hearing. Learn more .

3) Mark your calendar: The next big Tar Sands action is scheduled for November 6 at the White House.

The proposed Keystone XL pipeline could have extremely adverse effects on the climate, drinking water and public health. I hope you will join me in calling on the State Department to deny the permit.

Thank you for all you do,

Allison Fisher
