Census Bureau Mirrors CEO's Alternative Measure of Poverty
Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau released a research report on the new Supplemental Poverty Measure. The new measure provides a more realistic picture of poverty by accounting for both families' resources and their expenses. This effort was informed by the work of the NYC Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO), which released its first report on an alternative measure for New York City in 2008.
New York City was the first government to reformulate the official poverty measure developed more than 40 years ago. CEO based New York City's alternative measure on recommendations made by the National Academy of Sciences and has since issued a number of reports that show how poverty has changed over time.
