In response to the announcement of cuts totaling $176 Million to the budget of the New York State Courts, on June 13, 2011 the New York County Lawyers' Association ("NYCLA") established a Task Force on the Judicial Budget Cuts (the "Task Force"). Former Appellate Division Justice Stephen G. Crane and I were asked to serve as co-chairs of the Task Force, on which a distinguished group of bar leaders and jurists was recruited to serve.

In August 2011, The Task Force issued preliminary reports on the effect of judicial budget cuts on New York State Courts in Manhattan and on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The reports can be found at: http://nycla.org/siteFiles/News/News164_1.pdf and http://nycla.org/siteFiles/News/News165_1.pdf

The Task Force intends to present a more in-depth and comprehensive investigation over the next several months, which will include a public hearing at NYCLA, and the preparation of a more comprehensive and detailed report on the impact of the budget cuts on the administration of justice after more time has passed and the longer-term impact can be more fully assessed.

Our investigation continues and we need your input. Your responses to our survey will be of great help. Please take a few of minutes and help us monitor the impact of the judicial budget cuts on the administration of justice.
