On Wednesday, May 18, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join City Council Member Mathieu Eugene for a ceremony at Brooklyn Borough Hall commemorating Haitian Flag Day. Weather permitting, the flag of Haiti will be raised over Borough Hall. BP Markowitz and Haitian-Americans in attendance will also discuss the federal extension of temporary protected status for Haitians in the United States following the January, 2010, earthquake, including nearly 8,000 Haitians in Brooklyn.
Haitians in Brooklyn and around the world consider Haitian Flag Day an opportunity to stand in solidarity with their nation, particularly 16 months after the devastation from the earthquake.
