From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Survey data on teens indicate that teens with eating disorders may have other mental issues.

At the National Institute of Mental Health, Kathleen Merikangas says about 2.5 percent of U.S. teens met criteria for having an eating disorder at some point in their lives. She says teens with eating disorders had more mental problems, such as mood, anxiety, or behavior disorders.

Merikangas says some eating disorders were associated with relatively few other conditions, and others with several:

``Youth with anorexia nervosa did not tend to have many other mental disorders, but those with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder tended to have multiple other conditions.'' (10 seconds)

The study was in Archives of General Psychiatry.
