The news was huge. On Monday the influential Rothenberg Political Report said: "With a week to go until the May 24 special election in New York's open 26th C.D., Democrat Kathy Hochul now looks well-positioned to pull off a significant upset."
The stakes couldn't be higher. Democrat Kathy Hochul is a strong leader who has made it crystal clear that her focus in office will be jobs, jobs, jobs. While her Republican opponent has made it clear that she supports right wing proposals to radically change our social compact and to dismantle Medicare as we know it.
A GOP win could cost you big. According to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, if Republicans like Jane Corwin get their way, everyone now 55 and under will end up paying huge increases in their Medicare costs. For someone who is 55 today, it would amount to a $6,870 a year increase. But even as Republicans look to heap huge new costs on the middle class, they promise to keep the tax breaks in place for big oil.
The final week will be intense. In what many observers said was a sign of their desperation, Jane Corwin and the Republicans have already launched a nasty attack ad that the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization Factcheck.org has rated "bogus." This is not going to be pretty, folks.
A win would be big! New York's 26th district has long been heavily Republican. A win here now would send a message that would resonate throughout the 2012 election cycle.
The Key Word: Enthusiasm. The Rothenberg report said that even though the race now leans Democratic, the final outcome will be determined by how much enthusiasm the parties can instill in the voters. Enthusiasm and turnout are the key to a big win.
And that's where you come in. Enthusiasm we can do! I have had the chance to host a number of phonebanks to support Kathy Hochul. It has been great to see the enthusiasm and the person-to-person energy that has radiated from these events. I recently hosted a fund raiser here in New York and was proud to see that everyone in attendance was just as enthusiastic about our chances as we were.
So please join us. Next Tuesday is Election Day and we will be having another phone bank at my campaign office. It's your chance to put your enthusiasm to work and to make your voice heard - person to person. I hope you can join us, or that you will support Kathy by contributing to her campaign , or calling a friend, or passing on this email-. It's going to be such a close race and everything and anything you can do will make a difference.
Please click here to contribute to Kathy's campaign and join us on Tuesday May 24th for an all day phonebank at our campaign office located at 24 E 93rd St, Suite 1B from 10am to 8pm. RSVP to Alex at agius@carolynmaloney.com
