STRINGER HATES THE CENSUS NUMBERS

stringer banner.jpgStatement by Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer on 2010 Census Results

These new census figures are preposterous, because New York has experienced--and continues to experience--significant population growth. The number of foreign-born residents here nearly doubled between 1970 and 2000, according to a 2009 SUNY study, and it is absurd to think these trends essentially stopped in the last ten years.

The impact of this undercounting has severe ramifications for the city, when it comes to redistricting and the distribution of crucial social services to those most in need.

While Manhattan had a decent showing in the census, we're all part of the same city. The 2010 census has missed significant population growth in Brooklyn, Queens and other parts of New York, and we simply cannot stand for such inaccurate data. I look forward to working with the city to challenge these deeply flawed numbers at the appropriate time.
