BP MARKOWITZ JOINS ANNOUNCEMENT OF NORTHSIDE FESTIVAL LINEUP, LAUNCH OF NEW "BROOKLYN MAGAZINE"

On Thursday, March 10, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined The L Magazine and Northside Media Group to unveil this year's lineup at the Northside Festival and to announce a new publication, Brooklyn Magazine. Full press release below.

"I'm thrilled that the Northside Festival has such an exciting lineup of performers and events," said BP Markowitz. "But I'm also ecstatic because it draws so many visitors to Brooklyn--from what I understand, they come from all over the country and even the 'outer borough' of Manhattan. That gives a boost to our local economy and helps make Brooklyn one of the hottest tourist destinations in the country."

The L Magazine's Northside Festival will make its return to the streets of Williamsburg and Greenpoint on June 16-19, 2011 for a third year of music, film and art. While The L will book a handful of anchoring shows, including those at a 5,000-capacity outdoor space at McCarren Park in the heart of Williamsburg, we'll leave the majority of shows in the hands of the community's most forward-thinking independent record labels, bloggers, radio stations, record stores and other tastemakers. A glimpse into the 50+ showcase presenters handpicking the bands they think you need to hear includes BrooklynVegan, Kanine Records, Consequence of Sound, FREEwilliamsburg, Luaka Bop, Lefse Records, Hardly Art, Sacred Bones Records, Brooklyn Bodega, NYCTaper and Panache Booking.  

With early-bird badges on sale Friday, March 11th at 10am for a limited-time price of $60, we figured it'd only be fair to also give a sneak peek into the 250+ bands who will be playing. Needless to say, we're psyched to announce the return of Beirut to their adopted hometown when they headline the McCarren Park stage on Friday, June 17. Such of-the-moment names as Twin Sister, Deer Tick, Allo Darlin', Javelin, Ava Luna, Delicate Steve, Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! and Gabriel and the Hounds round out a tiny taste of what else is in store.  

Aside from the 100+ shows set to take place in nearly every venue in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, festival goers can expect indie film screenings curated by some of the most relevant names in the business, neighborhood art galleries opening their doors free to the public for Northside Open Studios in conjunction with Greenpoint Open Studios, and Bedford Avenue to be closed down to traffic on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. 

New for 2011 is Northside's "Ideas" component, a series of panel discussions exploring the ways business innovators intersect with creative inventors; complete with schmooze sessions. A Northside DIY Film Competition for shorts and features is in the works as well, bringing developing filmmakers together under one roof. The finalists' works will be screened at UnionDocs in Williamsburg before indie-minded producer Ted Hope, DIY pioneer Todd P, and other jury members. Prizes include cash, an exclusive Northside Rooftop Films screening, and camera rental packages. 

Four-day, all-ages badges will go on sale this Friday at 10am for a limited-time price of $60.  Individual tickets to the all-ages Beirut show at McCarren Park on June 17 are available for $25 advance / $30 day of the show.
