Counting counties' activity
|
From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has drilled down to the county level, to see where people are more likely - and less likely - to get the physical activity they need.
The CDC's Nilka Rios Burrows:
``Americans who live in parts of Appalachia and the South are least likely to be physically active in their leisure time. Areas where residents are most likely to be active are the West coast, Colorado, Minnesota, and parts of the Northeast."
Rios Burrows also says inactivity sets a pattern with obesity and diabetes. All three have been going up. But she says moderate activity for at least 150 minutes a week can help to control weight and diabetes.
The study is in CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
