BP MARKOWITZ HOSTS CENTRAL BROOKLYN JAZZ CONSORTIUM ANNOUNCEMENT OF 12TH ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
Celebration of Brooklyn's contribution to jazz runs April 1 through April 30
On Wednesday, March 2, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium for a press conference at Brooklyn Borough Hall announcing the 12th annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival to run April 1 through April 30. This year's Festival, entitled It's All Jazz, will present concerts and events, as well as feature jazz bands celebrating Brooklyn's contributions to jazz. Today's kickoff featured entertainment from the Bedford Village School Ensemble.
"Next month, New York City's 'jazz central' will be the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival," said BP Markowitz, "and you'll be able to hear 'blue notes' practically any day of the week in Brooklyn. You might say the 'vanguard' of jazz is happening right here in our borough. After all, who needs Manhattan when Brooklyn is 'birdland'? In the month of April, whether you want bebop or fusion, straight-ahead or Latin soul and every kind of jazz in between--you must take the 'A' train to Brooklyn!"

Brooklyn, New York-February 15, 2011: 12th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival - IT'S ALL JAZZ, April 1- 30, 2011 presented by the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium at venues from Coney Island to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. New York City's longest continuous running grass roots festival dedicated to Jazz will feature international and local artists: Carlos Garnett, Candido Camero, Houston Person, Charles Tolliver, Arturo O'Farrill, Ray Abrams Big Band, Central Brooklyn Jazz All-Stars, and others at entertainment venues, colleges, cultural and faith based institutions. Brooklyn jazz has a rich past and its legacy is celebrated every April, which is nationally known as Jazz Appreciation Month. CBJC's newly elected chairperson Clarence Mosley, Jr. states, "As CBJC enters its twelfth season in presenting Jazz an American original, African American created, art form to the under served populations of Brooklyn. CBJC continues to recognize the contributions and creativity of the jazz community of Brooklyn, past and present. This forty plus member organization strives to provide more jazz education programs to all and enhance the economy of our community via cultural tourism." Brooklynites, jazz luminaries such as Max Roach, Eubie Blake, Betty Carter as well as less heralded artists Cal Massey, Betty Roche, Gigi Gryce and C. Scoby Stroman contributions are remembered by way of conferences and performances. Other scheduled events includes: return of Panamanian saxophone great Carlos Garnett at Boys and Girls High School; National Endowment for the Arts jazz master, Cuban percussionist Candido Camero's 90th birthday celebration with the Arturo O'Farrill Quintet at Brooklyn Public Library's Dweck Center; remembering Brooklyn's jazz shrine, The East, at Brooklyn College with Charles Tolliver; youth jazz presentations; Jazz: The Women's View Point; BAMcafe presents The New Cookers in concert; photo exhibits; and Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Brooklyn Historical Society just to name some.
Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival has grown from a nine day neighborhood event to a highly anticipated borough-wide music series. The backbone of this community-based jazz festival are musicians and venues which keep Brooklyn's jazz scene vibrate and fuel the local economy. Stanley Banks, Steve Cromity, Donna Tulivu Cumberbatch, Eric Frazier, Jeff King, Beareather Reddy; Jazz966, Parlor Jazz, Rustik Lounge, Sistas' Place, Two Steps Down, and Sugar Hill Restaurant are some of the performers and locations jazz lovers will experience during Brooklyn jazz festival 2011.
Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium acknowledges our festival partners. Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, Brooklyn Academy of Music/BAMcafe Live, Brooklyn Public Library's Dr. Stevan Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture, and H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music at Brooklyn College are expected to participate. Founded in 1999, the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium is an amalgam of patrons, entertainment venues, musicians, faith based and community organizations. Over the past 11 years CBJC has presented an annual spring festival, established a Brooklyn Jazz Hall of Fame & Museum™, and produced yearly programs that feature local jazz talent. CBJC is a nonprofit corporation committed to preserving, promoting and supporting live music within the under served communities of Brooklyn.
