FIGHTING CORPORATE GREED

public_citizen_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgLucas,

I need your help.

Public Citizen has a remarkable opportunity to ramp up our work protecting people from corporate greed.

In appreciation of how much we accomplish on a shoestring budget, several longtime friends of Public Citizen will, for a limited time, match every dollar we raise, up to $250,000!

I need your help to capitalize on this extraordinary offer before it's too late.

Please donate $10 right now so that your contribution will be worth twice as much in support of all that you and Public Citizen stand for.

This is when it really matters. I'm counting on you to be as generous as you can.

Through anonymous political expenditures and shameless lobbying offensives, special interests representing the greediest among us have debased our democracy, corrupted our leaders and put progress in a stranglehold.

Meanwhile, ordinary Americans like you and me are still in a hole. A hole the oligarchs want to dig deeper and deeper:
  • With its absurd decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that corporations can spend literally as much money as they want taking over our elections to stack local, state and federal governments with their lackeys.
  • Medicare is on the chopping block. Some Republicans in Congress are scheming, in effect, to eliminate one of the most successful, popular and important programs in our nation's history. Many thought this day would never come.
  • Congress couldn't manage to stop subsidizing the oil industry, in spite of the fact that Big Oil is raking in profits like never before, gas prices are at record levels, and the public overwhelmingly favors denying the industry further government handouts.
  • The modest financial reforms passed last year are under unrelenting attack by Wall Street. The Big Banks, by the way, are doing phenomenally well. But, evidently, phenomenal just doesn't cut it for Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase.
  • Multinational corporations and the obscenely wealthy continue to pay far less than their fair share in taxes even as basic health and safety regulations, social programs and environmental protections are flayed, gutted and left for dead.
But Public Citizen -- as we've done for 40 years, side-by-side with hundreds of thousands of members and activists just like you -- is steadfastly challenging the misbegotten belief that profits matter more than people.

That's why this match offer is so exciting and why it is so essential that we work together so that citizen power can overcome corporate contempt.

Contribute $10 today and your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Act now! We have a limited amount of time to take advantage of this opportunity. The stakes are simply too high to leave even one dollar on the table.

Thank you.
