People can use discretion about calories from sugar. Nutrition experts say people should watch discretionary calories - those being calories in addition to what you need just for proper nutrition.
At the University of Minnesota, researchers looked at survey data on Minneapolis-St. Paul-area residents from 1980 to 2009. They found that, as added sugar consumption increased, weight went up. Dr. Huifen Wang:
``Added sugars are considered as discretionary, and people can actually avoid them in their diets. For example, drink water instead of sodas.'' (10 seconds)
The study presented at an American Heart Association meeting on nutrition and physical activity was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
