STAND UP TO GREEDY BANKS!

Will your town be the next to stand up to greedy banks like Chase? Click here to demand it.

Dear Lucas,

I'm writing to share some exciting news from my Village-- the Village of Hempstead. In early April, the Village of Hempstead passed a resolution to stop doing business with JP Morgan Chase in protest of their foreclosure policies-- and helped me get a mortgage modification.

My family struggled to get JP Morgan Chase to modify our mortgage since 2009.

After years of making our payments like clockwork, the financial crisis hit my family hard. My husband was laid off. Shortly after, I was hit by a taxi and was left unable to work for months. When our daughter started college, we fell behind on our mortgage.

These days it seems every American family has a story like this. A story about choosing between paying for healthcare and putting food on the table, between their children's futures and the roofs over their heads.

But the big banks who are responsible for our layoffs and hard times turned taxpayer-funded bailouts into record profits and executive bonuses instead of using the money to help homeowners.

JP Morgan Chase is one of the worst. Only 6% of NY homeowners who sought help received a permanent mortgage modification from Chase. And this year Chase CEO Jamie Dimon took home a record breaking $17 million bonus. That's more than ANY other banker.

The first time I applied for a mortgage modification I was told my income was too high to qualify for a modification, the next time I called it was too low.

It seemed like the rules kept changing.

And no matter how many times I completed my application, one document or another went missing and my family remained in Limbo.

But shortly after the Mayor of Hempstead put the spotlight on Chase's foreclosure policies by closing the village's $12.5 million Chase account, my family received a trial modification!
For the first time in years I can breathe again.

It took a village to stand up to Chase, and the Village of Hempstead is the first of many. The Village of Freeport closed their account at JP Morgan Chase and Albany County legislators introduced a proclaimation calling for the Commissioner of Management and Budget John McPhillips to close procurement cards with JP Morgan Chase.
My family, like many others, did things the right way. We saved for our home and saved to send our daughter to college so that she could have a better future.

But banks like JP Morgan Chase did not. And now they continue to put their greed ahead of New York families.

I am proud that my village is standing up for my family and refusing to to business with Chase. Click here to tell yours to do the same.
