RESTRICTING THE RIGHT TO VOTE

brennan.JPGDear Lucas,

I wanted to make sure you saw this clip  from the other night's Colbert Report, skewering the most significant assault on the right to vote in decades.

Six states have enacted harsh government ID laws.  Others curtailed early and absentee voting.  A Florida law has prompted a key nonpartisan group to halt all registration. We should all work together to assure that all eligible citizens can cast ballots.  Instead, millions of Americans -- especially students, the elderly, and minorities - risk disenfranchisement.

The Brennan Center's advocacy, research, and legal strategy is central to this fight. We are independent, nonpartisan, fact-based. Policymakers and the media rely on our work. Recently, the Washington Post , The New York Times , NPR , and many others featured our research.

In the coming months, we will release the first comprehensive look at this wave of restrictive voting laws.  And we will continue the fight for democracy into 2012. We will keep you posted.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Michael Waldman, Executive Director
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law
