From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Dads, congratulations on this past Father's Day. Now, about the next one: One thing you can do for your kids is to make it more likely that you'll be healthy for it.

Dr. Griffin Rodgers is director of the NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. He says about one third of men are considered obese, which makes them more likely to develop diabetes, along with heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. He notes that obesity is just one thing that can be controlled by healthy living:

``Being more active and eating better are two very important ways dads can improve their health. Dads can also improve their physical and mental health by getting adequate sleep, quitting smoking, and reducing how much alcohol they drink.'' (13 seconds)
