From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

A look at national survey data finds an increase in the number of people who drink. At the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Raul Caetano examined data on more than 85,000 survey responders from 1992 and 2002:

"The finding that caught most of our attention was an increase in most groups of about 10 percentage points in the proportion of people who told us that they were drinkers."  (12 seconds)

Caetano says this generally didn't mean people were drinking more individually - although that was the case with some. But he says drinking generally is a bad idea.

The study in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
