Lucas,
Since the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, there has been a collective call to hold BP and the other companies involved financially accountable for the damage they unleashed on the Gulf Coast's people and ecosystem - and rightfully so.
But we must not forget that our elected officials also must be held accountable. To date, no oil spill legislation has passed into law. In fact, very little has changed at the regulatory, legislative or industry level to address the systemic failures that contributed to this tragic event.
That's why Public Citizen and our allies are asking our activists to call their representatives on Friday, February 11, and urge them to pass a comprehensive legislative response to the BP oil disaster. Get your representative's phone number, here.
The oil spill commission that was formed to investigate the event has released its final report containing detailed recommendations about what needs to be done to prevent another disaster of this magnitude. There is no reason to delay any longer.
The tragedy stemming the BP oil disaster will be compounded if the safety and environmental safeguards and taxpayer protections that we so badly need -- as the disaster made evident -- go unfulfilled.
Please, call your representative on February 11 . Let's send a clear message to Congress that while the media may have left the Gulf Coast, we will continue to hold lawmakers accountable for ensuring that the events of April 20 are not repeated.
Thank you for taking the time to make this important call. Let's not let our elected officials forget that they are supposed to serve the public's -- not Big Oil's -- interests!
Thank you for all that you do,
Allison Fisher Outreach Director, Energy Program |
