'TIS THE DONATIN' SEASON

Dear Friend,

It always amazes me how quickly the years go by and the holiday season is upon us again.  With that, I am writing to wish you and yours a very healthy and happy holiday season.

Unfortunately, when I look back at the year in Congress, I see more conflict than resolution.  While we progressives and Democrats have fought hard against the most extreme assaults from the right-wing, Congress has squandered so much time that might have been spent doing critical work for the nation - creating jobs and economic development, building infrastructure, solving the mortgage crisis, and getting the economy back on track.  The Republican Party continues to be a party of three overriding goals: to keep the government small and impotent, to prohibit women from making their own decisions on personal matters such as abortions and contraception, and to keep President Obama from scoring any political wins, even if it means forfeiting our economic recovery and punishing working and middle-class Americans.

Not that I ever want to see Congress neglect its job, but the now-infamous failure of the "Super Committee" may prove more beneficial than would have its success.

While the "Super Committee" might have devastated Social Security and Medicare, automatic cuts in 2013 triggered by the failure of the "Super Committee" to reach an agreement must, by law, spare Social Security entirely and limit cuts to Medicare to providers only.  The prospect of the automatic cuts to the Pentagon budget may force members of Congress to do some soul-searching on the type of defense and discretionary funding cuts we're truly willing to support.  Will we, for example, reevaluate our aid to Pakistan or bring home some of the nearly 60,000 troops stationed in Germany (presumably there to guard against the threat of a Russian incursion into Western Europe)?

My dream for this holiday season is for Congress to pass legislation that stimulates the economy, levels the playing field, and helps lower and middle class Americans get out of debt and back to work.  Unfortunately, we may have to wait a bit longer for that dream to be realized.
