Markowitz Press Release.JPGBP MARKOWITZ URGES DOE TO POSTPONE TONIGHT'S VOTE ON VERIZON CONTRACT FOR UPGRADING PHONE, VIDEO AND INTERNET IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is urging the Department of Education to postpone tonight's scheduled vote on awarding a $120 million contract to Verizon to provide a second round of wiring for phone, high-definition video and high-speed Internet access for the City's public schools. At tonight's meeting, Brooklyn's representative to the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP), Gbubemi Okotieuro, will make a motion to postpone any contract with Verizon until its ongoing labor dispute is resolved.
If the vote proceeds, Mr. Okotieuro will vote "no" and encourage his colleagues to do the same.
