Dear Friends,
According to the latest weather reports Hurricane Irene remains on course to hit New York City at around 9pm on Saturday evening.
Mandatory Evacuation Ordered in Coastal Areas
In preparation for a storm that will be one of the largest many of us have ever seen in our city, Mayor Bloomberg has issued a mandatory evacuation order for New Yorkers living in Zone A, as well as all parts of the Rockaways in Queens. If you live in Zone A or the Rockaways, you must evacuate by 5pm on Saturday. Residents are strongly encouraged to stay with friends or family outside of an evacuation zone, or head to evacuation shelters which are now open.
- Find out if you are in the evacuation zone
- Find the evacuation shelter closest to you
- What to put in your "Go Bag"
- Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit for your home

MTA Shuts Down Starting at 12pm Saturday
Additionally Governor Cuomo and MTA Chairman Jay Walder are shutting down all MTA services. Starting at noon on Saturday, City subways and buses will stop running, as will PATH trains and commuter railroads. If sustained winds stay above 46 m.p.h. the Staten Island Ferry will also be suspended.
We will continue to post updates from the National Weather Service and alerts from the Office of Emergency Management on the Public Advocate's facebook page and on twitter .
