ABOUT TONY CANNATARO

Tony Cannataro has the experience and temperament to be an outstanding Civil Court judge. His varied work as an attorney, unwavering belief in our system of justice, and personal dedication to our community are just some of the reasons why New York County's judicial screening panels have found Tony to be "most highly qualified" to serve as a Civil Court judge for two years running. Throughout his career, Tony has demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that our legal system provides fair and compassionate justice to all.

An Experienced and Well-Rounded Attorney

An honors graduate of Columbia University and New York Law School, Tony began his legal career at the New York City Law Department. As an Assistant Corporation Counsel, and later Senior Counsel, Tony was lead attorney on over seventy trials that he conducted either to settlement or jury verdict

In 2000, Tony was invited to serve as Law Clerk to Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick of the New York Court of Appeals, New York's highest appellate court. While at the Court of Appeals, Tony assisted his Judge by researching and drafting opinions on substantial and complicated questions of law on a variety of cases dealing with constitutional, criminal, and civil law issues.

For the past eight years, Tony has dedicated himself to serving the public more directly as Principal Law Clerk to Justice Lottie E. Wilkins of the New York State Supreme Court, where he has worked on wide variety of matters affecting everyday New Yorkers. Conducting conferences with attorneys and drafting decisions, Tony has worked on all manner of trial matters, including personal injury, contract, employment discrimination, matrimonial and medical malpractice cases. Most recently, Tony has worked to protect our city's most vulnerable citizens who are physically or mentally incapacitated and in need of court-appointed guardians.

Dedicated to Our Community

Tony believes that fair and compassionate justice should be available to all and, for that reason, since 2003 Tony has volunteered as an Arbitrator in the Small Claims Part of the Civil Court helping countless New Yorkers have their day in court.

Tony has also dedicated himself to serving the community outside the courtroom. For over five years, he has volunteered at the Walk-In Legal Clinic of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Law Association assisting people who cannot afford an attorney with their legal disputes and court cases. Over the years Tony has coached students at Brooklyn Law School's Moot Court Honor Society and mentored students who have interned at the Supreme Court. He has taught several of continuing legal education courses dealing with civil litigation and trial practice and recently spoke at an elder planning forum for non-lawyers held at the City Bar Association.

Beyond the legal profession, Tony volunteers with New York Cares, where he recently tutored students in a 10-week program to prepare them for the SAT exam. Tony also serves as a trustee of the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum Alliance, an organization committed to preserving one of Manhattan's only surviving farmhouses. In addition, Tony was appointed by the Mayor to be a director of Figli di San Gennaro, the not-for-profit organization that oversees the distribution of proceeds from the annual Feast of San Gennaro to religious and charitable organizations in New York City.

Tony values our community and is dedicated to ensuring that every person who comes before the New York courts receives a fair hearing. Tony possesses sound judgment and has the courage and respect for the law to apply it decisively, consistently and even-handedly.
