Register 2011 is the "Year of the Rabbit" under the Chinese Zodiac, and the Chinese believe that rabbits bring luck to the humans associated with them. The rabbits themselves, however, are far from lucky. Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the United States, yet if an owner tires of the pet rabbit, he or she may lawfully kill the rabbit for fur, food, or keychains. This would be unthinkable with other companion animals. Why are rabbits different? Speakers will discuss what makes rabbits special and the laws that permit rabbits to be eaten, worn, or otherwise abused. Speakers: NATALIE L. REEVES, Founder, Big Apple Bunnies; CINDY STUTTS, Manager, New York City's Animal Care & Control Rabbit Program Sponsored by: Committee on Legal Issues Pertaining to Animals, Martha Golar, Chair |
