IT'S WORLD MALARIA DAY

national_institute_allergy_infectious_diseases_banner_nyreblog_com_.jpgIn the past year, important strides have been made to control malaria in many regions of the world, yet challenges remain. On World Malaria Day 2011 (April 25), NIAID renews its commitment to fighting the disease and acknowledges the important work being done in this area. Among our efforts:

  • Continued support for the Global Malaria Action Plan, an international, coordinated effort to control and eradicate the disease.
  • Innovative NIH-funded research in malaria treatment, such as novel compounds that may one day become human therapies, and prevention efforts, including a fungus that blocks the development of malaria parasites in mosquitoes.
  • Clinical testing of promising malaria vaccine candidates.
  • The recent launch of NIAID's International Centers for Excellence for Malaria Research, which is supporting researchers in 20 malaria-endemic countries.
