National Park Week , a program of the National Park Service (NPS) , is an annual Presidentially proclaimed week for celebration and recognition of national parks . It is an opportunity to engage families and communities in  "America's Great Outdoors," reconnecting them with nature and creating close to home opportunities for people to get outside, be active, and have fun.

In 2011, National Park Week takes place from April 16 through April 24. All national parks will have free admission , and will offer family friendly activities and special offers on tours, lodging, food, and souvenirs. The theme for National Park Week 2011 is "Healthy Parks, Healthy People." This theme highlights the connection between human and environmental health, and the role America's national parks play in both.

National Junior Ranger Day
The NPS will also celebrate National Junior Ranger Day on April 23, 2011, to coincide with National Park Week. The Junior Ranger program helps participants see and interact with a national park through a series of activities during their visit. Children complete activity books that lead them through their park in a kid-friendly way. When completed, they present their booklets to a ranger to earn a patch or badge and a certificate.
